What It Takes to Make a Baking Steel
Every steel we sell is 100% fabricated and processed locally in Singapore. “Made local” does not always mean better. But in this case (yes, we're biased), we truly believe we are making a superior product. And we're proud of it.
Material
High-quality carbon steel plate is selected for every batch, chosen for the density and heat retention that make it hold and transfer heat evenly through hundreds of bakes.
Laser Cut
Each plate is laser-cut to precise dimensions, so every steel comes out true to size.
Sand Blast
Most baking steel makers stop at one coarse blast. We run a two-step blasting process instead, for a noticeably smoother surface — elevated cooking experience, ease of cleaning & maintenance.
Grind & Bevel
Every steel plate is inspected and worked on by hand to ensure the edges are smooth and the steel is safe to handle.
Season
After a final visual inspection, each steel is seasoned with food-safe canola oil — and every steel in this step is personally handled by the owner before its packed away.

“Great success. Lots of fun. This plate gets very hot and will only cool down 10 hours later.
If you are new to cooking on steel like me, don't be alarmed by the external appearance: the crafter seasoned it in an oven with canola oil and it is expected to not be perfectly uniform. Just use it, clean it and season it again the next day.”

“This is one heavy duty slab and does what it says it does exceptionally well! LOVE IT! It comes shrink wrapped with a note on how to take care of it, which is easy as pie.”

“Best Buy for bakers. My pizza stone can throw away. It's as good as if not better than cast iron pan since u don't have to remove in and out of oven.”

“Well built, smooth surface, no sharp edges. Soaks up intense amount of heat from the oven, significant upgrade from my ceramic pizza stone. I get large bubbles on the pizza crust, which can't be achieved with my (cracked) pizza stone. Bottom browned nicely. Super fast delivery. Thanks seller!”

“Very solid heavy steel. I was contemplating for the longest time for Dutch oven or baking steel. I'm glad I made this choice. Doesn't take up space and has such even spread of heat. Too bad I'm not able to show very well how well my bread rose! Good purchase regardless.”

Common Questions
Everything to know before you buy
How is a baking steel better than a pizza stone?
Steel gets hot faster, stays hot longer, and more importantly transfers heat more effectively to your bakes than a pizza stone does.
Will my steel warp or crack over time?
Steel won't crack the way stone does — it's built to handle thermal shock and years of high heat. Extreme, uneven heat (like a torch on one small spot) can cause slight warping over time, but with normal home oven or stovetop use, that's virtually never an issue.
How long should I preheat the baking steel for?
200–250°C for 30–45 minutes helps the steel fully saturate with heat.
How do I season my baking steel?
Seasoning creates a natural, non-stick surface and protects your steel from rust — just like cast iron. Do this before first use, and occasionally afterward to maintain it.
What you'll need
- A high smoke-point oil (flaxseed, grapeseed, or vegetable oil)
- Paper towels
- Your oven
Steps
- Wash and dry. Wash your steel with warm water and a little dish soap to remove any manufacturing residue. Dry it completely — any leftover moisture will cause rust.
- Apply a thin layer of oil. Pour a small amount of oil onto the steel and rub it in with a paper towel, covering the entire surface — top, edges, and bottom.
- Wipe off the excess. This is the important part: wipe the steel until it looks almost dry. A thick layer of oil will turn gummy or sticky instead of forming a hard seasoning layer. You want a thin, even film.
- Bake it in. Place the steel in your oven and heat it to around 230–260°C (450–500°F). Let it bake for 45–60 minutes. You may see some smoke — that's normal, just make sure your kitchen is ventilated.
- Cool completely. Turn off the oven and let the steel cool down inside before removing it. Avoid rapid temperature changes.
- Repeat if needed. For a stronger, more durable seasoning layer, repeat steps 2–5 two to three times before first use.
How do I clean my baking steel?
After each use
- Let it cool slightly — but clean while it's still warm, not fully cold. Warm steel releases residue more easily.
- Wipe with a paper towel or cloth — remove loose flour, crumbs, or bits of dough first.
- Scrape off stuck-on residue — use a metal scraper, spatula, or stiff brush to lift any stuck bits. Avoid steel wool or abrasive scrubbers, which can strip the seasoning.
- Wipe with a damp cloth — if needed, use warm water only (no soap) to wipe the surface clean. Soap can break down the seasoning layer.
- Dry immediately and thoroughly — moisture left on bare steel will cause rust. Towel-dry completely, then place it back on the stove or in a warm oven for a few minutes to make sure it's fully dry.
- Re-oil lightly (optional but recommended) — rub a very thin layer of oil over the surface after drying to protect the seasoning and prevent rust, especially if storing it for a while.
What to avoid
- Soap or harsh detergents — strips seasoning
- Soaking in water — promotes rust
- Dishwasher — never
- Steel wool or abrasive scouring pads — damages seasoning
- Putting it away wet — rust risk
If rust does appear
Don't panic — it's fixable. Scrub the rusted area with fine steel wool or a scouring pad until the rust is gone, then re-season following the seasoning steps (wash, dry, thin oil coat, bake). Watch our quick video walkthrough HERE
What size fits my oven?
Measure your oven's interior width and depth with the door closed and leave at least 1cm clearance on each side. Not sure which of our sizes fits — including compact HDB and countertop ovens? Send us your oven model and we'll confirm before you order.
Can I use it on a gas stove or grill, not just the oven?
Yes! Use it directly over a flame in a BBQ pit, or straight on an induction stove — the steel holds up either way.
Can I leave the steel in the oven all the time?
Absolutely you can! You can leave your steel in the oven 24/7. It can even help to regulate your oven's temperature. Just be sure to ensure your oven is always dry and free of moisture after cooking with steam.
